This course is designed to help the manager of a business/structural unit to operate effectively and manage the employees: to communicate the goals, processes, and developments of the business clearly and consistently; assign tasks and control their execution; provide everyday support and promote cooperation among employees; motivate the employees by providing regular and effective feedback.  Also information on the resources available to managers, their usefulness in defusing tension in complicated situations, and their help in motivating, inspiring and promoting the activity and productivity of employees.

Target audience: Medium level managers with little experience in personnel management.

Aim of the course: Provide knowledge and practical skills for effective management of personnel. 


  • Understanding of manager's role and responsibility in reaching the goals of the business;
  • Knowledge of challenges in manager's work and the most effective tools in personnel management;
  • Understanding of the significance of motivation and motivating in everyday work;
  • Developed ability to provide feedback and motivate employees;
  • Understanding of the significance of communications in manager's work, its kinds and most effective tools;
  • Developed communication skills;
  • Concrete scenarios of action for different situations, including complicated ones, in everyday work. 

Duration: 2 days, 12 hours.

Active and interactive form of work. The course offers many discussions, role games, practical tasks in the course of analyzing which the participants will gain theoretical insights in each theme.


1. Introduction, getting acquainted. Agreeing on the rules of the course.

2. Management, management models, management styles. Managing as influencing. Manager's image. Real and ideal image of manager. 

3. Work execution cycle and roles of manager:

  • Knowledge necessary for a manager;
  • The roles of direct manager in managing the work process;
  • Types of analysis of the work process, their application;
  • What does the business expects of the manager? What do the employees expect? The mutual perception, expectations and worries of managers and employees;
  • Challenges and opportunities for the manager.

4. Skills necessary for a manager and their development:

  • Ability to set goals, reach an agreement on their fulfilment and quality criteria;
  • Planning of goals and activities; operational planning;
  • Delegating and authorizing: how to get maximum use of an employee's abilities;
  • Evaluation of work performance: has the planned result been reached?
  • Employees' movement toward development.

5. Everyday communication and interaction. Interaction: convincing and influencing. Attention, interest, and motivation. Resolving conflicts.  Resolving conflicts: the art of asking questions, advantages of reflection:

  • Rational and emotional communications;
  • Verbal and non-verbal communications tools;
  • What is important to an employee?
  • Ability to listen actively; ability to listen emphatically;
  • How to speak to be heard? Argumentation skills.

6. Motivating employees. The most effective ways. Providing feedback:

  • Talking to the employee. Preparation and management;
  • Positive and negative feedback;
  • Expressing criticism;
  • Manager's emotions and feelings as help/obstacle in providing feedback;
  • Praise as motivator;
  • Receiving feedback from employees.

7. Organizing teamwork. Awareness and efficient use of resources:

  • Team formation process;
  • Roles in a team, group cooperation;
  • Successful team development – its foundation, constituents, rules of the game in a team;
  • Social competence – readiness for cooperation;
  • How to promote cooperation.

8. Mental hygiene and individual competence of manager:

  • Power, workload, stress, lifestyle, health;
  • Emotional intelligence in management. Empathy in management;
  • Self-awareness: awareness of feelings, accurate self-assessment, self-confidence;
  • Self-regulation: control of emotions, ability to react, will to success, initiative;
  • Positive thinking and taking action. How to promote activity of employees.

9. Conclusion. Summary. Feedback and practical recommendations.

    • Continued learning is tantamount. I will try to delegate more instead of doing everything myself. Should not lose sight of the "big picture".

    • I liked the fact that course participants came from diverse fields, and as a consequence, there was an opportunity to find out about various situations and how to respond to them.
